An aquaculture project that aims to relieve overfishing pressures on Lake Victoria while farming indigenous fish as a nutritious and affordable source of protein. In addition to strengthening local food systems and improving food security, the enterprise also aims to alleviate poverty and provide sustainable livelihoods to locals through the creation and promotion of green jobs along the aquaculture value chain.

Dssinline utilises cage cultures, which are aquaculture production systems where fish are reared in floating net cages. Fish cages have been placed in Lake Victoria along the coast of a village in the Buikwe district in eastern Uganda. The village suffers from high levels of unemployment, malnutrition and poverty; these are the core problems that Dssinline aims to tackle through sustainable aquaculture.

Aquaculture is one of the most important sectors for the economy but being hindered by low availability and inconsistent supply of locally produced feeds to show the increased performance of production based on existing commercial to small-scale farms. The number of tilapia farms across Uganda has been declining over the last five years, putting further strain on the already strained aquaculture businesses in this industry. The disproportionate increase in the price of Tilapia and Catfish feeds to the farmed fish's final product is making it hard for local farmers with little or no financing to stay afloat in this business.

Due to the existing challenges in the sector, “DS Tilapia Feeds” imported a “Screw Fish feed excluder” from China, which is also known as the floating fish feed machine, that is currently being used to produce high-grade aquatic feed pellets (Powder, 0.8mm, 1.0mm, 2.0mm, 3.0mm, 4.0mm, 5.0mm & 6.0mm) whose protein ranges (32% – 55%) levels depending on the clients requests of the required protein content and based on the stage (Months) of the caged Tilapia/Catfish. These feeds are locally produced, and prices for the finished/produced/manufactured pellets are dependent on local material costs. The use of local ingredients in the production of fish feeds is a sustainable mechanism for the local fish farmers, subsequently leading to a better livelihood, a healthy export market, and a boost in revenue growth in this industry. The design of these aquatic floating feeds is in line with the UN Agenda 2030. This further contributes primarily to the progressive achievement of SDG targets of the Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. This additionally contributes through the promotion and progress made towards Goals 1-End poverty in all its forms everywhere, 8-Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment, and decent work for all, and 13-Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

The fish feeds made by the pellet extruder is a puffing type, more easily to digest for fish and our company “DS – Feeds” under “DSSINLINE SMC LTD” provides various formulations to meet the nutritional needs of the different fish types, at different stages of growth. -

The fish feed pellets sizes (0.8mm, 1.0mm, 2.0mm, 3.0mm, 4.0mm, 5.0mm & 6.0mm) of the fishes are able to float on the water surface without dissolution for over 12hours.

The high temperature and high-pressure process is also used to kill salmonellosis and bacterial infections and this also makes the pellets easily digestible, less pollution since we do not use chemicals in the production mixtures, and zero wastage of materials.

Not only do we make fish feed pellets, but also suitable for making feeds for dogs, rabbits, Chickens, birds, cats…etc. The market demand gives us guidance on what we can get involved in or not based on our machinery capacities.

The formulation of floating fish feed, also provides a starting point for those engaging in or interested in purchasing DS Tilapia floating fish feeds.

Diet Formulation of the floating fish feed

The raw materials of the floating fish feeds are wide and varied, mainly including Blood Meal, Fish Meal, Soybean Meal, Cotton Meal, Wheat Pollard, Broken wheat, Lysine, Methionine, Maize Meal, Acidomix, Vitamin premix, etc. In areas where some of these ingredients are not available or the costs of these raw materials is high, there may be alternatives for each. e.g. Wheat bran or Rice Bran can replace Maize bran, blood meal can partly replace some of Fish Meal, etc

The process used in the formulation is purely scientific to get a complete formulation using ratios for the pellets to float. Otherwise, one can get defects which are incomplete nutrition, high feed coefficient and low feed utilization rate. So, the feeds being produced/manufactured at “DS – Feeds” have been tested and found to be stable, low feed coefficient and high feed utilization rate in the production process as indicated in this write-up above.
